The MagLevel PMAG features a window with a round count
indicator. An orange mark on the magazine spring allows the
operator to tell at a glance how many rounds are in the magazine
(see photo below). Because
The Polymer Magazine (PMAG) is a lightweight 5.56 NATO, M-16
compatible magazine. The PMAG features a pop-off storage/dust cover
that alleviates pressure from the magazine feed lips, allowing for
storage of loaded magazines without risk of feed lip creep that
often causes malfunction in standard aluminum magazines. PMAG
utilizes a resilient stainless steel spring for corrosion
resistance.
The PMAG 4-way anti-tilt follower works in conjunction with the
magazine body to stabilize the loaded round stack. The PMAG body
has a constant internal curve (USGI ones have a straight portion
that fits in the mag well, both outside and inside) and allows for
consistent feeding regardless of round count. This configuration
prevents nose-diving and bolt-over head failures. The PMAG body has
a ridge molded inside the front which separate the left stack of
rounds from the right and guides the bullet tips all the way down
the magazine. The rounds cannot twist or go sideways.
A removable Dust/Impact Cover/Magazine Tool protects feed lips
and allows long-term loaded storage. When installed, the cover
pushes down the top round very slightly, taking pressure off the
feed lips. This eliminates distortion of the feed lips due to
long-term storage (6 mos or more without unloading at all) when
fully loaded. It also seals off the magazine from dirt, and
protects the feed lips if dropped onto a hard surface. The magazine
cover can also be used as a disassembly tool.
The PMAG's one-piece molded long-fiber reinforced polymer body
resists denting, eliminates weld spots and joints, and improves
durability. The PMAG body has slightly raised reinforcing ribs,
making it slightly bulkier than the aluminum USGI mags.

The PMAG appears to be the most reliable magazine available for
use with the M249 SAW. We have read numerous accounts of informal
tests where the PMAG has functioned flawlessly for numerous
magazines though the SAW and participated in an informal test of 12
magazines on our own. No other magazine we know of has been shown
to consistently function with such a high degree of reliability in
the M249 SAW.
